Random Mountain Bike Questions Quiz
Переглядів 131 тис.Місяць тому
Bikes can be complicated machines. They have tons of moving parts, constantly changing “standards,” and plenty of different words for what is sometimes the same thing. This week, we wanted to do something a little bit different and put together a quiz to allow everyone to test their knowledge. Challenge yourself and challenge your friends-take score and let us know how you fared in the comments...
Testing the Cheapest Bike Tools on AliExpress - Part One
Переглядів 362 тис.Місяць тому
In a perfect world, everyone should own high-quality bicycle tools. However, in the real world, a broke college student needing to replace their cassette doesn’t always have the means to pay a bike shop. Thus, the $3 cassette tool enters the scene. We know that anything of good quality carries a premium and, at a point, a diminishing return, especially depending on the volume of use it gets. To...
How the Bike Industry Takes Bike Photos
Переглядів 215 тис.2 місяці тому
Have you ever wondered why photos of bikes you see on a website or in a magazine look so damn good? Is it the camera? Is it the fact that it’s a professional athlete’s finely tuned race bike, or is it simply brand new? Maybe it was photographed in a studio? Photoshopped? Maybe…While it surely could and very well may be one or a combination of several of those factors, in reality, it’s usually m...
The Rise and Fall (and Rise Again) of Cannondale's HeadShok
Переглядів 346 тис.3 місяці тому
In the 1990's, the HeadShok was one of the smoothest suspension forks out there, but eventually certain limitations forced Cannondale to rethink their design. What came next was the one legged 'Lefty' fork, which used technology from the HeadShok and lives on to this day. Both are extremely smooth, and had/have a cult following. The Genius of Narrow Wide Chainrings - Why they work!
Переглядів 711 тис.3 місяці тому
The 'narrow-wide' chainring is a drive gear for a bicycle that features an alternating tooth profile. This is to say, one tooth is wide, and the next is narrow just like a bicycle chain. Today we'll watch slow motion footage demonstrating why these gears are so effective at keeping your chain on. Eric @BCpov mentioned on our Substack how Ghel patented a very similar gear back in 1978 for heavy ...

If you mtb at all seriously enough to set up tubeless, you need to just get a cheap harbor freight pancake compressor and be done with it. These tubeless inflator gadgets all suck

Dont think you should expect full seating with something like that boost bottle. This is just to get a basic air seal so you can pump it up to high seating pressure. Ive done many, many tubeless tires where a floor pump has ZERO chance to do that.

Would that inflator work on smaller tyres? Like on a gravel? Maybe those big tyres are just too much volume

just used the same groupset on a rented Heckler SL, it makes a lot of sense on ebikes due to the way they deliver power. I loved it even though I agree there's a learning curve due to the habit of soft pedalling. I am nostalgic too: I am 42, my first real mtb had no suspensions at all, but I had wonderful 21 gears Deore LX that people before me never had. My current gravel bike reminds of that one, and I love it because it akes me feel a teenager again 😅 But times move on, we benefitted from lot of evolutions in last 25 years and of course this is not stopping. I am still riding my 26" MTB but it's exciting and very welcome to see the mtb technology moving ahead.

I have 1.15 L canister for popping tubeless tires and it has worked every time. That being said, my biggest tire was a 27.5 and 2.1 width so not as much volume as a wide 29. So I'm guessing 0.7L really isn't enough for this application.

First and last time I used a pressure washer on my bike was April 2023, and found that I had blasted some of the softer compound out of my Nobby Nic Addix Speedgrip tires, and had to replace them. So, YMMV. I’ll still do it again (judiciously), as it did a great job on my cassette.

my parents got me a 200 dollar walmart hardtail when I was 13. I rode that thing almost every day across roads, dirt, mountain trails, snow, sand, shallow streams etc. basically any terrain you can think of, that bike went through it. The only thing I ever had to replace on it was the tires and inner tubes. Other bike kids made fun of me for not being able to afford the 2k-5k bikes that their parents bought for them, but mine outlasted them all. Wish I never got rid of it (was part of a trade to help my brother get his first car)

Spent a year dealing with tubeless seating problems. Pumping my tires twice a week, unscrewing valve stems, sealant spills, etc. Took the rim tape off, washed the inside of the tire and rim, and put tubes in. No more BS. I pump my tires once a month and get on with riding. No regrets.

When race cars went from H Transmissions to Sequential the old car builders thought there is no way it was worth the weight and complexity, lap times dropped by a couple seconds. Same when paddle shifting over took sequential shifting. I have been holding off but next year I may be switching to this wireless system.
